A new kind of shoot

IMG_6706 Despite having photographed several people, I’ve come to find that each shoot comes with its own stories, challenges, and successes. no matter how much planning/scouting go in to the prep. Earlier this week, I discovered that a work acquaintance of mine used to do some modeling for a bridal store, as well as some runway modeling for Nordstrom. It wasn’t much of a surprise, as she’s a very pretty girl, but I had yet to really work with anyone who’s actually gone on a semi-professional photo shoot before. I definitely learned a lot.

We shot at only a few locations on a hot summer evening in Seattle. I was concerned that she would be too warm or uncomfortable and that would affect the shoot, however it seemed to cool just in time for the shoot. So we hit theIMG_6679 beach at Golden Gardens for our first location.

  What made the shoot so much fun overall, was that she was very enthusiastic and had several ideas of her own that lead to photos I might not have otherwise taken. For the shots with the water in the background, I really wanted to convey a summer evening, so I used warm tones and positioned her to get the lens flares and sun streaks. This was something I hadn’t really experimented with, but I feel it really added to the shots.
IMG_6671  I don’t know what it was, but most of the photos from this shoot are vertically positioned (hot dog style). Between the subject and the beautiful backdrop, there was just so much to capture vertically. I noticed this as I was re-touching the shots.

Throughout the shoot, she played along and even jumped in the water for a series of shots. This one (LEFT) is among my favorites from the evening. Mainly because it captures the aforementioned sun  streaks, but also captures the water mid-air, and a relatable expression on her face.IMG_6890

There are so many great shots from this evening. Who knows, there could be a few more shoots with this model. Stay tuned and keep reading. Lastly, chime in with comments. I’m always looking for feedback and opinions.

Goin’ to the front yard and we’re… gonna get hitched. Goin’ to the front yard-o-love.

As I mentioned in my last entry, I traveled to Bend, Oregon last weekend for a wedding. I wasn’t the official photographer, but I decided to bring my camera along and see what I could see. It was unlike any wedding I have ever been to or heard of, but the pictures turned out pretty well.

shots from the weekend

I went on a road trip this weekend with my dad to a town outside of Bend, Oregon. It was for a wedding, but it was more like a really great Super Bowl party (except without football). The good news is that I got some shots that are a little outside my usual spectrum of subjects. Enjoy!

IMG_6235copy This photo is my favorite from the trip. This bridesmaid had my attention right away, and the camera caught her. To me, the interesting piece of this photo is that she’s clearly being talked to by the man in the upper left corner. Yet she’s clearly not paying attention and is instead focused on the camera. It’s like the world is going about its business and for a moment two strangers connect.

 IMG_5869 Between Seattle and Bend is hundreds of miles of desert. In the middle of the day it just looks desolate. In the evenings, different colors and tones emerge and they certainly caught my eye on this drive.

IMG_5924 A single tree on the top of a brown, grassy hillside. This was something spotted by my dad as he was driving and I quickly stuck the camera out the window to capture it.

IMG_5881 Stitch This panoramic stitch was taken just outside of Yakima. It’s a little dark, but I envision this printed large and on canvas… and hanging in or outside a restroom. ha.

One more of the girl, since I know that’s what you’re looking for anyway ;)

meet the women in my life

My day job is with a company that employs roughly 90% young professional women. As an amateur photographer, you might say my work interests dovetail rather nicely. In other areas of my life, I’m fortunate to know even more nice young women who are equally photogenic. Meet the girls.

HDR Photography: Video of the shoot

This isn’t anything I’ve ever done, but I find it to be incredibly impressive. Video and photos from Dave Hill.  Enjoy!

Ever pull a plane with your bare hands?

IMG_5164

Last Saturday, a friend of mine and his wife asked if I’d come shoot a Big Brother’s & Big Sisters fundraiser. My friend’s wife works for the organization and I guess they were having issues with the photographer they typically use.

I was excited to help, and got a few good shots. It was a bright and HOT Saturday morning, which made the picture-taking really tough (the bright, not the hot necessarily).

The fundraiser basically consisted of 22 teams of 5 people that pull a couple Cessna Citations 75 feet for the best time. They had some awesome sponsorship incentives from Horizon Air, Widmer, Jamba Juice, Monster, etc. So the winning team won free round trip tickets anywhere Horizon flies. Surprise surprise that the winning team was made of 5 military-looking gentlemen. Overall the event earned roughly $50,000. In this economy, that is VERY impressive. IMG_5207 selective

The photos were okay from the event. I’m not sure it’s my best work, but  I tried to play up the color and energy of the event. In some cases, I implemented some selective color to increase the intimacy of the photo and make the organization’s color (purple) stand out.

More Photos of a Young Seattle Actress

I know my last few posts have included several little tastes of a recent photo shoot with my friend Annie. I don’t intend to continue posting photos of her forever, but a few of the leftover shots became test subjects in my experiments with photo treatment. Don’t know what I mean? Here’s a taste;

First Edit:

Treatment:
IMG_4880 copy

I really wanted her freckles to stand out and the colors to be borderline selective and a tad muted. The treatment is supposed to make it look a little more vintage and unusual. I have a feeling most people will like the first edit over the treatment, but I put it to you. What do you think?

Making my mark

Good News.

IMG_4909My photo-life is taking off. With several requests for photos, an opportunity for a small showing of work at a local coffee shop, and this blog with growing readership (but not comments) I can now begin to really see what’s possible with this former hobby turned passion.

Thanks to everyone who is reading and following along, voting on my IMG_4877photo entry in the Bing photo contest, and sharing my work with friends and family wherever you think of it. The word is catching on, and I’m seeing my photos get picked up on small blogs and web sites under the creative commons license. Here’s a taste, and stay tuned for a wealth of photos coming soon;

Photos of a young actress

A couple days ago I went on a brief photo shoot in the evening with my friend Annie. Annie is an actress (and damn talented too). She wanted some headshot-like photos taken. However, since I don’t really have a mindset for that stuff most of them turned out to be portraits… but portraits I was very pleased with. We spent maybe 30-40 minutes shooting and here’s a taste of the results.

Scream Colors!

IMG_6585 copy2

At the request of very persuasive people, I’ve decided to write a post speaking to color use in photos.

Most photogs will agree that getting the color correct is one of the most difficult aspects of photo editing. There are so many dimensions of color; tone, hue, saturation, temperature, etc. and this can be overwhelming when touching up photos. On the bright side (pun intended) it offers a variety of options for your image.

For most photos, the goal should be to make the colors pop and convey mood without being too distracting. In the photo above the colors stand out, but not quite to the point that they look animated or distract from the subject. In most cases, that is what you will be seeking.

TEMPERATURE:

IMG_2376

Many photos can be greatly influenced by “temperature.” This photo to the right is meant to be ‘warm.’ The orange, yellow, and deep red tones are enhanced giving this an intimate feel.

IMG_2376cool

The opposite enhances the blue, green, and purple tones. This gives the same photo more of a desolate or detached feeling. For this particular photo, I opted for the former. However it’s all in what you’re going for.

SELECTIVE COLOR:

Lastly, selective color is a growing trend among photoshop beginners and can be used in very interesting ways. It can make a focus area pop, and the color you select can deeply influence the feel of the photo given that it’s the only color that appears. Let me show you what I mean;

IMG_3195

The moral of the story is to experiment with color, tint, temperature, and selective color to create an image that conveys the feeling of the photo.  Enjoy!

Textures, textures, textures.

It is amazing to me how impactful texture can be in a photo. There are literally a million different textures out  there that can convey an equal number of feelings. For example, I saw a really great wall drawing on the side of a building in Georgetown. I felt compelled to take a photo of it.

IMG_4615

By itself, it’s nothing worth framing or really getting excited about. However, with some time spent selecting a texture, shade, etc. I was able to crop and get this image;

IMG_4614not  bad eh? Obviously this is a pretty extreme texture. The desired end-goal was a sort of DaVinci, renaissance drawing.

There are other cases, where an added texture just adds enough to enhance light and shadow, thereby making a photo intriguing.

 IMG_8021 copy IMG_7879 copy

And Finally, the absence of texture, and a smoothing or blurred effect can have just as much impact on the feel of the photo.
